Darwin
In the botanical gardens in Darwin, a monitor lizard crossed my path.
Noiselessly, it slid out from underneath a red hybiscus bush on the left, and crawled across the path, right before my bicycle.
The dragon forced me to squeeze the brakes hard, with such force infact that I lost balance and fell to the ground.
He had scaly skin, the colour of clay, but in it I could see the reflection of the rainbow.
In Darwin I wore a flower-print dress to the pub. After three weeks in the bush, I felt the need to scrub-up; I'd gone to a shopping mall one afternoon and bought this dress. It was very pretty, sleeveless with a tight bodice and a flouncy skirt just above the knees. It had a print of tiny pink and fuchsia flowers all over. Anyway, that same night I wore the dress to a bar that was full of single men. And all night long, I durnk beer for free.
